HSD 2020: actions, activities, and hundreds of mobilized people

For HSD 2020, Montreal stakeholders organized over 1,500 activities to celebrate young people persevering at school.

While we could not possibly report on all of the activities happening across the Island of Montreal, we would like to feature a few of them below.


SCHOOL PERSEVERANCE RIBBONS AT THE CSPI ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDING

A few years ago, André Brisebois and his students in the welding and fitting program at Centre Anjou built two giant school perseverance ribbons. In honour of HSD, these ribbons proudly decorate the façade of the Commission scolaire de la Pointe-de-l'Île administrative building.

School perseverance wall

For Hooked on School Days, users of Verdun libraries were invited to create a wall of perseverance, on which children shared their school achievements and adults left notes of encouragement and congratulations.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT BREAKFAST - 80% CLUB

For HSD, 41 student athletes were honoured at Collège Ahuntsic for having achieved a grade of at least 80% in all of their courses during the winter and fall 2019 terms.

PRESENTATION BY NAILA VITOR BIASSOU

Naila Victor Biassou, a young actor in the series Toute la vie, spoke about her inspiring experience at a presentation about perseverance for students in the Alternative Suspension program.

DÉLIRE

As part of DéLIRE, a workshop on the pleasure of reading adapted for 16–20-year-olds who don’t enjoy reading, a two-voice reading on the theme of slavery was followed by a discussion with students at the FGA LaSalle centre (Clément building) at the Octogone library.

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF THE ALTERNATIVE SUSPENSION PROGRAM

On February 20, 2020, the YMCAs of Québec celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Alternative Suspension program, which has now also been transplanted to Europe. Educational, community, and financial partners were in attendance, not to mention the program’s devoted staff members. 

 

WELCOMING STUDENTS

Numerous partners braved the cold and came to hand out cups of hot chocolate to students in 4 elementary schools in the Sud-Ouest borough to congratulate them for their work at school.

PRESENTATION BY A SOCCER PLAYER

Grade 6 students at Saint-Joseph school in Anjou were treated to a presentation about perseverance by retired Canadian soccer team member Francesco Augustin, who spoke about the importance of having goals and dreams.

Staying in school: an open letter signed by 11 youth organizations

For HSD 2020, the directors of 11 organizations signed an open letter about the importance to young people of significant adults showing their support every day. The signatories were: Academos, Pour 3 Points, JeunesExplo – Stages d’un jour, Succès Scolaire, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Montreal, Alloprof, Speech, ChallengeU, YMCAs of Québec, Fusion Jeunesse, and Robotique FIRST Québec.

SCHOOL-FAMILY-COMMUNITY PROJECT: PARTNERSHIP SERVICES AND PRACTICES THAT TRANSFORM NEIGHBOURHOODS

Over 80 neighbourhood organizations, citizens, funders, institution representatives, local schools, and partners from other school boards and neighbourhoods gathered to celebrate the results of the impact assessment by EFC agents on the territory of Saint-Léonard.

PLAYING TOGETHER

For the 12th edition of On Joue Ensemble, students from 7 high schools and 2 elementary schools of the CSPI performed on stage at CÉGEP Marie-Victorin for other students attending CSPI schools. The students will perform their concert, which took weeks to prepare, for their peers, families, and friends throughout HSD.

RECOGNIZING TENACITY 

Six young people from Saint-Léonard elementary and high schools were congratulated for their tenacity in the face of obstacles such as difficult migration journeys, challenging life stories, or returning to school as adults. These young people were treated to a stirring speech from the person who nominated them.

ZONE ADO: TAKING MY PLACE

Zone ADO at the Plateau-Mont-Royal library is a place for young people to text, read, watch videos, find novels they like, do homework, and discover new activities. This time, new board games were introduced.

SCHOOL PERSEVERANCE SONG AT PIE-XII SCHOOL

Nicholas Thompson, music teacher at Pie-XII school in Saint-Léonard, composed a fun song entitled “Lâche pas la patate!” to encourage and motivate his students.


PRESENTATION AT LIONEL-GROULX SCHOOL

The Centre d'écologie urbaine de Montréal invited Joël Boucher, assistant principal of Lionel-Groulx school, to speak about Québec’s first “connected” community school. Located in a disadvantaged area of Longueuil, this elementary school was selected to be part of a pilot project.

DISTRIBUTION OF BOOKLETS AND CERTIFICATES

Workers from youth organizations in Rivière-des-Prairies and the local youth roundtable congratulated parents from RDP elementary and high schools during HSD 2020. For the occasion, the workers greeted parents at the schools’ daycare services and handed out certificates congratulating their involvement with their children.

RadioZone podcast - school perseverance

Students at the Zone produced a podcast about staying in school for HSD 2020.

 

WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

This vernissage showcased the works of 13 students from Jean-Baptiste-Meilleur school. Inspired by the concept of the self-portrait in art-therapy, each student presented six art photos that showed a positive side of themselves as a way to boost their self-knowledge and feelings of self-confidence and uniqueness.

SPECIAL HSD CENTRAIDE NEWSLETTER

Centraide published a special newsletter for HSD. This edition featured an overview of the situation in Greater Montreal, a personal account by Tommy, a young dropout who is trying to move forward with his life, and a peer-assistance program to help new arrivals integrate.

SCHOOL PERSEVERANCE SHOWCASE

The Plateau-Mont-Royal library is suggesting a selection of books on the topic of persevering at school. The books are in various formats and target different ages, to help young people persevere in all their projects.
